A cookbook for kids
"Yum-O! The Family Cookbook by Rachael Ray" offers recipes that are simple enough for older children and teens. Tips for "itty bitties" get younger children involved, too. The illustrations and full color photographs make this an inviting read. All proceeds from "Yum-O!" (Clarkson Potter, $22.50) benefit Ray's Yum-O Organization, dedicated to promoting healthy relationships with food and cooking.
Release garlic's flavor
If you don't own a garlic press, mince the garlic on a cutting board, then sprinkle it with salt. Turning the knife on its side, press the garlic into a paste.
Is the fish done yet?
Sometimes it's hard to tell whether a thick piece of fish is cooked through. Use an instant- read thermometer; the internal temperature should be 140 degrees.
Calling all readers
Call it a grinder or a hoagie, but the Italian sub is by far the best sandwich ever. The long roll stuffed with meat, cheese and condiments really hits the spots. Unless, of course, you're hungry for a cheesesteak and happen to be in Philly. Oh, the sauted meat, the melted provolone cheese and the grilled onions -- yum! Tell us about the slices of your life. Send your sandwich memories, along with a photo if available, to Taste, The Modesto Bee, P.O. Box 5256, Modesto 95352; e-mail email@example.com.
