Getting ready for college can be overwhelming enough, and shopping for room decorations can add to the anxiety.
Dormify, an online home decor brand specializing in small spaces, can help relieve some of the stress with a chic touch.
Mother-daughter duo Karen and Amanda Zuckerman founded Dormify in 2011 when Amanda was a college sophomore who felt frustrated by the lack of stylish dorm decorations.
Customers can buy each item a la carte or buy ready-made collections, which include bedding, throw pillows, a throw blanket and other decorative accessories.
“We cater to a bunch of different styles and personalities to see which speaks to you more or less, and with the click of a button you can buy the whole collection,” Amanda said.
The online retailer offers a variety of services to assist customers in finding exactly what they want. The site has a live chat teacher to ask for design advice. Another aspect of the store is its blog, which features content from its style advisers regarding DIY projects and decoration inspiration.
“We do continuously offer tips and ideas for starting to plan and get organized,” Amanda said. “We really hold your hand through the process with our style and design team.”
Check out these tips from Karen and Amanda about the best ways to arrange and decorate your space.
Rearrange your space – The first thing that the experts recommend doing is rearranging the furniture in your room. Before unpacking, move everything around to give the room a whole new look. If possible, Karen and Amanda suggest lofting your bed for even more floor space.
Start with decorating your bed – “I would recommend starting with the bed, because that’s really the centerpiece of the room,” Karen said. “That’s where you can bring in a lot of personality.” Karen and Amanda suggest putting your bed flush against the wall for a daybed look. The bed takes up less space and doubles as a couch.
Work with a neutral color – Using a neutral color throughout the room can bring the room together. “You (and your roommate) may have different tastes, but if you have one unifying color it looks more cohesive,” Karen said. The new collection boasts blues and grays as the new neutrals.
Maximize your space – The experts made many recommendations for making the most out of minimal space. “We suggest bringing in accessories with double uses,” Karen said. Ottomans are great for seating and inner storage. They suggest getting the most out of the closet, and Dormify’s Six-Shelf Sweater Organizer is a perfect way to store jeans, sweaters and bulkier clothing items. “Another great way to utilize space is to use your door,” Amanda said.
Use your walls – Creating a gallery wall with pictures adds an easy, personal touch to any room. Dormify’s temporary wallpaper jazzes up a plain white wall or ceiling.
