Hilmar Cabrillo Civic Club 30 offers scholarships designed to help students of Portuguese heritage enroll in an accredited U.S. college or university. The Central California Association at Mistlin Gallery is calling for entries for the “Young at Art” 2014 exhibit, previously known as “Young Masters.” Exhibition dates are March 4-29. Teachers can submit students’ artwork Feb. 28 from noon to 5 p.m. Individual young artists can submit their work March 1 from noon to 4 p.m. There is a limit of two works per student, with a fee of $2 per entry. The Anthony P. Forakis Scholarship will be awarded by the Forakis family and the Modesto “500” Lions Club scholarship committee. The number of scholarships and their amounts vary each year based on the qualified applications, but range from $250 to $1,250 based on the following criteria: Musical accomplishments and future goals; overall academic achievement; letters of recommendation; financial need; community service. Applicants must be age 17 to 24 and Modesto City Schools or charter high school seniors, or graduates attending a college or junior college. They must write an original essay, “Why I should receive a scholarship and how this scholarship will affect my personal development.” Applications are available by contacting Pat Gillum at (209) 525-9211 or Mention Anthony Forakis Scholarship in the subject line.
