Today and Sunday hold several celebrations with outdoor festivals in Modesto and the Mother Lode to help you take advantage of the first weekend of fall and the pleasant weather that forecasters promise. Here’s a look:
MoPride – Today: The Modesto LGBT community and friends are invited to the city’s annual pride celebration in Graceada Park. The festivities will include live entertainment, information and merchandise booths, a beer garden and more. New this year are a series of sporting events including a doubles tennis tournament, 5K run/walk and a women’s flag football exhibition. 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Admission is free. For more see www.mopride.org.
Coyotefest – Today: This annual event in the Mother Lode features a parade, Wild West “shootouts,” a car show, live music, horseshoe and coyote howling contests and more. 10 a.m. Main Street, Coulterville. Free. (209) 878-3015.
Fiddle & Bango Contest – Today: The Fiddle and Bango Contest (yes, banjo is spelled wrong, but that stems from a mistake made by organizers during the first event 32 years ago and they’ve lovingly held onto the quirk) also includes a chili cook-off and poison oak show. Entry fee for fiddle and banjo competition is $12 per category. Spectators should bring lawn chairs, hats and sunscreen. For $5, you can buy a cup of chili from local teams competing in the chili cook-off, which has a 9 a.m. registration for the 10 a.m. competition. The day concludes at 4:30 p.m. at Columbia State Historic Park. Free admission; $12 competitor entry fee. (209) 536-1672.
Jamestown Pioneer Days – Today: Main Street in Jamestown will transform back to the pioneer era with Western re-enactments throughout the day, courtesy of the group Guns of the Chosen Few. Also on the schedule are family games, street vendors and more. There will be an anvil shoot at high noon. 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in downtown Jamestown. Free. (209) 984-0888.
Unite Fest – Sunday: Presented by Star of David Ministries, this family festival in downtown Modesto will offer vendors, live music, a kids corner and refreshments. Tenth Street Plaza, 1010 10th St. from 3 to 7 p.m. www.starofdavidministries.org.
