AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY -- The 10th annual Sundown Celebration Gala, "An Evening at the Races," is scheduled for Aug. 15 between 7 p.m. and midnight at The Fruit Yard in Modesto. It features gourmet dining, live music and dancing, entertainment, a chance to bid on live and silent auctions, midway games, pig races and other special attractions while raising funds for cancer-related programs in the community, research, patient services, advocacy and education programs for youth, adults, and health care professionals. Tickets are $100 through July 31 and $125 after that date. Volunteers are needed to assist with setup, decorations, registration, auctions and games during the event and cleanup the following day. An orientation is set for July 28 at 6 p.m. at the DoubleTree Hotel in Modesto.
UNITED WAY AND KAISER PERMANENTE -- The Neighbors In Health 2009 free community health fair for thousands of medically uninsured and underinsured families will be held Aug. 16 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Kaiser Permanente Central Valley facilities. Medical professionals will provide free services to thousands, including a children's clinic (immunizations and medical, dental, hearing, vision, school entry and sports exams), women's exams (pap smears, mammograms, etc.), men's physicals, podiatry clinic, STD screenings, HIV counseling, health education, adult chronic conditions diagnosis (blood pressure, cholesterol, diabetes, and body mass index screenings), no-charge laboratory and pharmacy services for day of fair only, plus referrals to no-cost or low-cost services and follow-up exams. Both medical (doctors, dentists, nurses, physician's assistants, etc.) and nonmedical (interpreters to assist physicians with patient contact and test results, direct patients to appropriate services/lines, information booth, patient and volunteer registration, patient forms, etc.) volunteers are needed. Three shifts are available 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., 7 a.m. to noon, and 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Volunteers are also needed to assist with setup Aug. 15 between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. Volunteers must be at least 16 years old, and a copy of medical license or certificate is required for medical professionals.
DELTA BLOOD BANK -- Volunteers are needed to serve refreshments, visit with donors following their blood donation, and make donors feel comfortable and appreciated before leaving the blood bank. Individuals can choose to help at the office or one of the mobile collection sites located in Stanislaus, San Joaquin, Calaveras, El Dorado and Tuolumne counties. Training is provided and volunteers are certified. Flexible volunteer 3½-hour shifts are available Mondays through Saturdays depending upon site. Volunteers must be at least 16 (or 14 if volunteering with a parent).
PARENT RESOURCE CENTER -- Volunteers 14 and up are needed to participate in fun activities, arts and crafts, coloring, water play, assist small children with motor skills development, read aloud and serve snacks while parents attend classes and parenting groups on Monday and Wednesday mornings, Monday and Tuesday afternoons, and Wednesday evenings.
