AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY RELAY FOR LIFE -- The 24-hour event that mobilizes communities across the nation to celebrate survivorship, remember those who lost their lives to cancer, and raise money for the fight against cancer will be held April 25-26 in Oakdale and Angels Camp; May 2-3 in Patterson, Turlock, Tuolumne and Tracy; May 16-17 in Ceres, Ripon, and Manteca; and May 30-31 in Modesto and Riverbank. Volunteers are needed on the first day of each relay to register walkers and teams, assist with the sales and setup of luminarias for the evening ceremony honoring cancer victims, and help with other activities during the event, and on Sunday to assist with cleanup at the conclusion of the event at all sites. Teams are also invited to sign up, gather pledges and participate.
MARCH OF DIMES MARCH FOR BABIES -- The national effort raises money to support the March of Dimes' mission of preventing birth defects and infant mortality through research, education, community services and advocacy. A march will take place April 25 at Graceada Park in Modesto. Volunteers are needed to assist with setup/cleanup and registration, to act as human sign guides and to serve refreshments. Flexible shifts are available between 6 a.m. and 1 p.m. Individuals may also help babies get a healthy start by signing up on their own or with a team to gather pledges and participate to raise dollars for the fight to save babies.
MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS SOCIETY OF NORTHERN CALIFORNIA -- Walk MS will take place April 25 at Downey Park in Modesto. Volunteers 15 and older are needed to assist with setup and decorations, greet participants, take volunteer registration, serve breakfast and lunch, provide traffic control and walker motivation along route, and more.
SIERRA VISTA CHILD AND FAMILY SERVICES -- The 17th annual Sierra Vista Golf Tournament will be held April 24 at the Turlock Golf and Country Club and offers a day of golf, food, and fun while supporting abused, neglected and emotionally disturbed children and families in crisis. Volunteers 21 and older are needed to assist with games and special hole contests, set up raffle items, serve refreshments and more between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. Volunteers 16 and older are also needed to assist with setup and player registration between 7 a.m. and noon and to assist with cleanup and tear-down of the course between 4 and 8 p.m.
STANISLAUS ARTS COUNCIL -- Senior Spotlight brightens the State Theater with entertainment on May 3 at 1 p.m. Billed as "a variety show designed to please viewers of all ages," the Senior Spotlight features talented seniors, ages 55 and older, performing in a revue (singers, dancers, comedy acts, monologues, etc.) complete with costumes, a stage band and professional-grade lighting and sound equipment. General admission tickets are $10. Volunteers of all ages are needed to assist with setup, serve refreshments, act as ushers and clean up between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. The Arts Council is also seeking sponsors and donors.
STANISLAUS COUNTY ELECTIONS OFFICE -- A statewide special election will be held May 19. Volunteers are needed to serve as poll workers, bilingual poll workers, and on-call poll workers from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. Poll workers help set up the voter precinct, maintain security of the ballots and voting equipment, and assist voters as necessary. A $95 stipend is offered for the volunteer's time and commitment, which includes a mandatory two to three-hour training class. Classes are offered April 25-28 in Modesto, Oakdale and Turlock. Interested individuals must be registered volunteers in California and attend training. Volunteer applications are available at www.stanvote.com.
