A small museum in a Walnut Creek city park serves as a haven for wounded wildlife.

Founded in 1955, the Lindsay Wildlife Museum treats nearly 6,000 injured or orphaned wild animals each year.

Visitors can view and interact with more than 50 species of native California animals, including viewing a gray fox up close, hearing a red-tailed hawk cry and watching a bald eagle enjoy lunch.

There's also a hands-on discovery wildlife room for children and an area that highlights small domestic animals and offers some pet education.

Through April 18, the museum hosts "Birds in Art." The exhibit consists of original contemporary works by 60 painters and sculptors. Included are 11 two-dimensional pieces; one depicts a scavenging crow and is made of tire scraps gathered from roadsides.

A gift shop, offering educational and other gift items, is open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Lindsay Wildlife Museum is in Larkey Park, an ideal spot for picnicking and playing.

The park has beautiful trees and play structures for toddlers and older children.

The community pool at Larkey Park, although open only seasonally from May to September, can make for a nice respite when the days become hotter.

Also located in Larkey Park and near the Lindsay Wildlife Museum is the home of the Walnut Creek Model Train Society, which has a model railroad situated at the park. It is open the last Friday evening of each month and on specific weekends throughout the year.

To see the Walnut Creek Model Train Society schedule or learn more about its HO scale railroad, visit, www.wcmrs.org.

A visit to the Lindsay Wildlife Museum offers an afternoon of walking with wildlife and enjoying the surrounding abundance of nature.
