TJ's owner keeps the cocker spaniel cool and comfortable before a surf-dog competition this month in Imperial Beach. As the heat continues, it's a good idea to watch for signs of heat stroke in your pet.

Symptoms include heavy breathing, listless or sluggish behavior, maybe foamy saliva and bright-red gums. An animal suffering these symptoms should be taken to a cool place and given cool -- not ice cold -- water. Applying a cool washcloth to the animal's ears, forehead and paws also can help it recover.
