Gillian Wegener of Modesto wrote to thank the Davis High School students, members of the school's recycling club, who helped clean the yard of a residence on Pearl Avenue this month.

"The huge amount of garbage and miscellaneous objects that had built up around the house had become both a danger and an eyesore," Gillian said. "It says a lot when high school students are willing to get up and out early on a Saturday to help make their community a cleaner and safer place."

Gillian also gave "special thanks" to officer Vern Fabry "for organizing the effort as part of the Neighborhood Preservation Unit of Modesto Parks and Recreation."

Bobbie Whitmore of Modesto called to thank the man who helped her a few weeks ago at the post office on Sylvan Avenue.

"I have major back and arm problems, but I needed to get the package mailed," she said. "I wrestled it out of the car and onto the sidewalk when a gentleman came out of the post office and said, 'May I carry that for you?' He carried it into the post office and even put it at the end of the counter, so all I had to do was carry it to the person who would take care of me.

"I was so pleased because I was hurting so badly and the package was too heavy. I didn't think to ask his name."

There are so many horror stories and complaints about hospital care these days that it was nice to get a positive note from Modestan Rob Roy Phillips. He said, "My wife recently returned home from having major surgery at Memorial (Medical Center). She was treated by the staff as if she were a member of their family."

He goes on to say that if you have to go to the hospital, request room 5208. I've heard of hotel and even doctor recommendations, but this is the first hospital room tribute I've recorded.

Late last month, the Salida School District renamed the Mildred Perkins School Child Care Center to honor the late Marilyn Frakes. Sandy Bucknell, former child development educator at Modesto Junior College, admired Marilyn.

"She was the person who in the early 1970s started all of the programs that the Salida district has for preschool children," Sandy said. "In the mid-80s, she added before and after school programs. Marilyn was a really competent woman who tirelessly worked for our children. She was a real dynamo in the advancement of early childhood development in Stanislaus County."

Marilyn retired in January 2007 and died a few months later from cancer.

The new sign reads "Marilyn Frakes Child Development Center," a nice tribute to a wonderful role model who made a difference in our community.
