The Modesto Junior College speech and debate team was ranked second overall in Northern California for community colleges last weekend at the Diablo Valley College Speech Tournament.
Compared to teams from 23 other two- and four-year institutions, MJC's team is ranked fourth, behind Los Rios College District, California State University at Long Beach, and San Francisco State University. The MJC team defeated teams from the University of California at Berkeley, Bethany University, Santa Rosa Junior College, Columbia College, Delta College, the University of California at Davis and more.
In last weekend's competition, MJC students Heather Rayburn and Danielle Lawson took first place in duo interpretation. Lawson also placed second in dramatic interpretation, while Rayburn and Matt Cangiamilla were finalists in the event. Jon Cottrell placed second in impromptu speaking, and Carly McCullough was a finalist. Paul Hooper took third place in after-dinner speaking. Angelina Norwood and Rebecca Benjamin were finalists in extemporaneous speaking. Norwood, Hopper, Cottrell and Benjamin also won quarterfinalist awards in parliamentary debate.
MJC's next tournament will be Nov. 10-11 at the University of the Pacific in Stockton.
Nicole Leu, a senior at Orestimba High School in Newman, has been awarded a $1,000 scholarship as part of Standard Pacific Homes StanPac program.
Leu has a 4.2 grade point average and is part of her school's Academic Decathlon team, as well as the Hispanic Leadership Council. She is also part of the tennis team. She plans to major in biology in college.
