Beyer High School art students are painting a huge quilt square in trompe l'oeil style. The painting on plywood is meant to look like a genuine folk art quilt. The project will kick off an upcoming folk art show.
According to art teacher Debi Bonsack, Barn Art Quilts are taking the Midwest by storm. The larger-than-life folk art quilt designs are slow to catch on in the West however. Bonsack believes her students' quilt painting will be the first in the area. The 8-foot square will be erected on her renovated old barn in time for the upcoming show. The show will include homemade gift baskets, quilts, paintings, photography, hand made bags, embroidery, jewelry, wearable art, 3D assemblage lighting and much more.
The folk art show to take place over Thanksgiving weekend will be free to the public and will feature area folk art wares in time for the holiday season. This will be the first time to host this event which is a free event for the artists as well as the public.
The idea of the folk art show is to share with friends and neighbors an old-fashioned Christmas in these hard times.
Bonsack's barn is located at 13480 Orange Blossom Road in the Oakdale/Knights Ferry area. The exhibit will be open Nov. 27 through Nov. 29 from 10.a.m. to 5 p.m.
