A San Diego girl lost overnight in the High Sierra was found safe Friday morning, the Madera County Sheriff's Department said.
Bryanna Barnes, 16, got lost Thursday morning while taking part in an adventure program above Bass Lake, sheriff's spokesman Erica Stuart said. At 10:47 a.m. Friday, she made contact with rescuers about five miles from a search command post.
Stuart said Bryanna heard rescuers, who were calling out for her on loudspeakers, and responded with a whistle of her own. Stuart said Bryanna was prepared for an emergency because she carried the whistle.
"She found us," Stuart said. "She's a Girl Scout."
According to members of the Summit Adventures group, Bryanna was taking part in a rope-training course and told advisers she wanted to change her clothes behind a tree. After she didn't return, the group notified rangers. Stuart said Bryanna got turned around after changing her clothes and walked in the wrong direction while trying to rejoin the group.
