At least five masked intruders forced their way into a southwest Modesto house early Wednesday, assaulted and tied up two residents and kidnapped one of them, police said. The kidnappers later released the victim near Keyes.
Heather Graves, spokeswoman for the Modesto Police Department, said “five or six” intruders went into the home in the 800 block of Bristlecone Way shortly after midnight. They assaulted two men in their bedrooms and demanded money and jewelry, she said.
The intruders had an assault rifle and a handgun, Graves said. They tied up the men; when the victims did not give them any money or jewelry, most of the intruders left the house, forcing one of the victims to go with them. “One (intruder) was supposed to stay behind,” Graves said.
They forced the man into a waiting Chevrolet Silverado and then drove around. At one point, the victim heard one of the kidnappers make a phone call and ask if any money had been found.
The kidnappers released the victim in the Keyes area, where he flagged down a passing car for help.
The remaining intruder then left the home. After waiting some time and hearing nothing, the victim who had been tied up in the house made his way to a neighbor’s home, Graves said.
Both victims suffered lacerations in the attack.
Police were investigating with help from the Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Department, which responded when the man who had been kidnapped was found. No suspects have been identified, Graves said, and investigators have not established why the victims may have been targeted.
