A man was shot in the neck Friday afternoon following an altercation at a central Modesto shopping center.
Modesto police and rescue personnel were dispatched to Tully Road and Bowen Avenue at about 5 p.m. for a report of man who’d been shot and was lying in the grass along the sidewalk at the intersection’s northwest corner.
Sgt. Steve Hinkley said the suspect was seen running north through an alley west of Tully and a man matching his description was found a few blocks away at Mount Vernon Drive and Fay Avenue. A gun was later recovered from the alley.
Police would not release the suspect’s name because he is a 16-year-old juvenile.
Never miss a local story.
The 20-year-old victim was taken by ambulance to a local hospital where he remains in stable condition.
Hinkley said preliminary reports suggest the victim, the suspect and as many as two other people had been involved in an altercation at the shopping center across the street “some time” prior to the shooting.
Lt. David Van Dieman wouldn’t comment on what motivated the shooting Friday night but said the suspect and the victim know each other, and that the shooting was not gang-related.
