A 37-year-old Atwater woman suffered head and hip injuries early Thursday after she was struck by a vehicle while crossing Marguerite Street. The woman’s 6-year-old daughter was also knocked down and suffered minor bruises, police said.
Rachel Gaulden was taken by helicopter to Doctors Medical Center in Modesto. The child was taken to the same hospital by ambulance, Atwater police Sgt. Dick Wisdom said.
“It appears she (the child) was knocked down by the force of momentum. The mother took the brunt of the collision,” Wisdom said.
Gaulden suffered a fractured skull and pelvis. The child suffered minor cuts and bruises, police said.
Police said the woman and child were heading west across Marguerite Street just before 8 a.m. when a “dark sedan” driven by a 25-year-old woman, whose name was not released, turned off Olive Street and struck the woman.
Officers found Gaulden in the middle of the road.
“She appeared to be in a substantial amount of pain,” police said.
Wisdom said the crash remains under investigation, but said neither drugs nor alcohol are suspected factors.
