Democrat Cathleen Galgiani has pulled ahead of Republican rival Bill Berryhill in the 5th Senate District, according to updated vote counts posted in the last hour.
Galgiani had 137,767 votes to 136,261 for Berryhill, her first lead since the vote counting started on election night, 15 days ago.
Galgiani took the lead thanks to provisional ballots counted in San Joaquin County, home to 70 percent of the district’s voters. The ballots had to be verified before they could be tallied.
Stanislaus County, where 27 percent of the voters live, planned to release updated results this evening.

Berryhill, a Republican, has led in Stanislaus, as well as in the tiny part of Sacramento County that is in the redrawn district. In the early results after the Nov. 6 election, he led by more than 4,500 votes.
Galgiani and Berryhill currently represent adjacent Assembly districts that include portions of the Northern San Joaquin Valley.
