The case of former Merced County Sheriff's Deputy Johnny Mathis, who's been charged with battery for allegedly pushing his wife against a door inside the county jail while he was on duty, has been moving its way through the courts.
On Wednesday, Mathis' lawyer, John Garcia, asked for and was granted a pretrial continuance in the case so that he can review video tape evidence, Garcia said.
In the meantime, the District Attorney's Office has offered Mathis a plea deal in which he would have to go to counseling for nine months after which the charges would be dropped.
Garcia said he and his client will look at how to proceed in the case after all the evidence has been reviewed.

"We haven't seen any evidence of wrongdoing," said Garcia about the discovery in the case thus far.
The next hearing has been scheduled for Oct. 27 in Department 7 at 9:30.
The judge in the case is Hugh Flanagan.
