HILMAR -- Dominic Dami ran for 118 yards, threw for 80 more and two touchdowns and even kicked a 40-yard field goal. But it might have been his defense that most impressed his coach.
The young quarterback picked off a pass with only a minute to play, securing Modesto Christian's 23-13 victory over a determined Hilmar on Friday night.
That was one of six turnovers for Hilmar, four of which Modesto Christian was able to turn into scores.
"It was a battle," said Modesto Christian coach Steve Gleason, in only second game as the team's head coach after taking over after an 0-5 start. MC is now 2-5. "Hilmar's a ... well-coached team. It was a battle back and forth."
Dami twice connected with tight end Raymond Nelson on scoring passes to push MC out in front.
Hilmar's Isaac Diaz scored on a 2-yard run to open the scoring in his first game back from an injury. He was re-injured in the second quarter and did not finish the game.
