CHOWCHILLA -- The Valley's longtime rivals gathered for the 81st time Friday night, the latest here at Henry Massaro Stadium.
A standing-room-only crowd of about 4,000 arrived to see Chowchilla play Dos Palos as hundreds of cars parked deep into the nearby neighborhoods. Nothing unusual.
A tri-tip barbecue smoked in the corner behind the northern end zone. Nothing unusual.
Dos Palos won. Nothing unusual -- it was the Broncos' 62nd in a series started in 1923.
Never miss a local story.
But how they won 31-28 -- now that was unusual.
"A game to remember," said Dos Palos quarterback Ryan Yriarte, who was most responsible for the win against a Chowchilla team ranked 18th overall in the Central Section and and No. 3 in the state by Cal-Hi Sports in D-III for CIF State Bowl Championships purposes.
Starting his third year at a program that has painted the ball green and emphasized rushing while plowing into state history -- No. 1 in league titles (46), No. 4 in section championships (15) and No. 5 in wins (594) -- Yriarte did his best imitation of Peyton Manning.
Yriarte threw four touchdowns, including three in a fourth-quarter flurry that had the teams combine for 35 points.
"The offensive line gave me a lot of time, the timing was great and receivers were getting open -- it was pretty hard to miss tonight," Yriarte said.
He only did once in the fourth quarter while completing 5 of 6 attempts for 98 yards and the three scores:
An in-stride strike to Jerry Warren for a 34 yarder, reducing Chowchilla's lead to 20-17 with 9 minutes and 57 seconds remaining.
A 9 yarder to Warren and a 24-20 lead with 5:47 showing, a score set up by Yriarte's 19-yard scramble on a broken play.
And, finally, a 7-yard pass to Jake Shelly in the back of the end zone for a 31-28 lead with 1:56 to go.
Dos Palos survived with a defensive stand after Brandon Beaton sailed 71 yards to the 14-yard line following Shelly's touchdown.
Beaton finished with 100 yards on 12 carries.
Yriarte completed 8 of 12 passes for 142 yards. Warren hauled in three of those apsses for 78 yards.
One week after carrying the ball 48 times for 221 yards, Chowchilla held Kevin Schofield to just 73 yards on 23 attempts.
