The Police Department is collecting used cell phones to give to victims of domestic violence and elder abuse.
The efforts are part of a nationwide initiative by the 911 Cell Phone Bank program, according to a news release.
More than 1,500 law enforcement agencies and community service organ- izations are participating in the initiative, which has more than 2,000 phones donated each month for 911 emergency calls.
Phones can be dropped off at the central police station at 611 W. 22th St. or at either of the substations at 1109 Loughborough Drive or at 470 W. 11th St. Other drop-off locations include the Valley Crisis Center at 529 W. 19th St., and at the Merced Senior Center, at 755 W. 15th St.
