John A. Pérez, speaker of the California State Assembly, announced the formation of a Select Committee on High Speed Rail and named Assemblymember Cathleen Galgiani (D-Livingston) as its chair.
A bipartisan group of assemblymembers was also selected by the speaker to sit on the committee, which include Mike Davis, Mary Hayashi, Jerry Hill, Jared Huffman, Kevin Jeffries, Fiona Ma and Jeff Miller.
The committee was formed, according to a news release, to promote the state’s interest in constructing a high-speed train system, as seen by the passage of Proposition 1A in November 2008. The main focus of the committee will be the creation and retention of California jobs relating to the construction of the high- speed train system, which will be a vital component to stimulating the state’s economy, the news release said.
“I am excited to share what we have learned about high-speed train networks from our international partners who have experience with building billions of dollars in high-speed rail infrastructure,” Galgiani said. “California can apply that knowledge and expertise to Californian’s system so we can ensure the success and profitability of our high-speed rail project and create tens of thousands of jobs to jump-starting our economy.”
The committee will be holding two informational hearings next month and provide a presentation by the Belgium delegation on its high-speed train network.
