An Atwater police officer is recovering after a hit-and-run driver struck his patrol car Friday night.
The CHP said the unidentified driver remains at large.
The crash was reported around 10:50 p.m. after Atwater officer William Martin was traveling westbound on Broadway during his routine patrol as the suspect was driving a Honda Accord northbound on High Street, said officer Luis Lara, CHP spokesman.
The suspect failed to halt at a stop sign, drove through the intersection and crashed into Martin's driver's side door. After the crash, the suspect got out of the Honda and fled on foot.
Never miss a local story.
Martin was flown to Memorial Medical Center in Modesto with injuries that weren't life-threatening. He has been released.
A description on the driver isn't available. Because the incident involved one of their own officers, Atwater police asked CHP to conduct the investigation.
Officers are asking witnesses or anyone with information about the driver to call officer Jason Schoonhoven at (209) 356-2956. Calls are kept confidential, and you can remain anonymous.
