An 89-year-old Dos Palos woman was killed this morning when she was hit while trying to cross a highway a few miles north of Dos Palos.
The woman was crossing from the west side of Highway 33 to the east side south of Highway 152, California Highway Patrol officials said. A southbound car had stopped to let her pass, but Patches McCarty, 35, of Dos Palos did not see the woman and hit her.
McCarty was northbound on Highway 33 in a 2006 Pontiac, the CHP said, traveling at 55 m.p.h. The woman was thrown onto the hood of McCarty's car, and then into the windshield.
The CHP said McCarty braked immediately after hitting the woman, which threw her from the hood of the car onto the asphalt. As of late this afternoon, the Merced County Sheriff's Department had not released the woman's name.
