The Merced girls water polo team overcame a strong second half by Buhach Colony to win its Central California Conference opener 12-9 on Thursday afternoon at Merced High.
“We played really well in the first half, we were up 7-2 at the half and then 8-2 early in the third quarter,” Merced coach Jon Dibblee said. “Then (Buhach Colony) came back with six unanswered goals. We just kind of let down, but we came back strong in the fourth quarter.”
Alison Miller paced Merced (5-2 overall) with four goals and five steals.Paige Rasmussen added three goals and an assist.
Keandra Parga led BC with three goals.

“It was a nice comeback,” Dibblee said. “They are a vastly improved team. We just have to stay focused.”

Molly Burns fired the low round of the day with a 49, but it was Turlock squeaking out a win in an early season CCC showdown.

REEDLEY -- Eliana Diepersloot racked up 12 kills and Shelby Seals finished with 27 assists as Chowchilla won 25-20, 25-18, 25-12.

DELHI -- Guiliana Martini and Melissa Belomontes each had four kills as Le Grand opened Southern League play with a win.
BUHACH COLONY 3, MERCED 0
ATWATER -- Jorge Torres and his brother Roberto scored within 7 minutes of each other midway through the first half to give BC a 2-0 lead.
TURLOCK 3, ATWATER 1
ATWATER -- Josue Barajas, Isaias Castellanos and Christian Madrigal scored goals as Turlock improved to 2-0-1 in the CCC. Tito Garibay scored Atwater's lone goal.
GOLDEN VALLEY 6, PITMAN 0
TURLOCK -- Matt Hubbard scored three goals and assisted on another as Golden Valley won easily.
LE GRAND 2, DELHI 0
LE GRAND -- Daniel Lopez and Albert Cuevas each scored for Le Grand.
MERCED 18, BUHACH COLONY 8
Kaleb Jones scored seven goals and Connor Greene added four goals and two assists as Merced cruised.
