Mark Puthuff, a former assistant sheriff for Stanislaus County, stepped down Wednesday from his job as Fort Bragg's police chief.
Puthuff and Fort Bragg City Manager Linda Ruffing said in a joint statement this month that he would leave the department to pursue other opportunities in law enforcement administration.
Ruffing said the police chief had modernized the department, which helped to reduce crime and address problems with gangs, methamphetamine and youth crime.
Puthuff started work in the coastal town of Fort Bragg in October 2006, a few months after losing to Adam Christianson in a race for Stanislaus County sheriff.
The bitter election campaign ended in a lopsided victory for Christianson, who garnered 62 percent of the votes.
