LOS BANOS -- Two people have been arrested in the homicide of a Los Banos man and the Merced County District Attorney's Office plans to file charges against them in the carjacking and killing of the man that occurred earlier this summer.
Yadira Garcia Salas Cervantes, 29, of Los Banos and Carlos Anthony Gallegos, 24, of Salinas are being accused of murdering Jorge Luis Zamora. On June 29, Zamora was found dead in his Los Banos apartment from what police said this week was a gunshot wound to the chest.
Zamora's body was not discovered until neighbors began smelling an odor coming from his I Street apartment and alerted police.
According to Cmdr. Ray Reyna Jr., Zamora's wallet and car were missing from his residence when police arrived to investigate. Police later discovered Zamora's car outside of Gallegos' home in Salinas. Witnesses identified Cervantes and Gallegos as having driven the vehicle, police said.
Detectives served search warrants at Gallegos' home and found property that belonged to Zamora, police said.
Gallegos and Cervantes were located by Salinas police. Both men were arrested on suspicion of murder and carjacking. Gallegos is being held at the Monterey County Adult Facility. Cervantes is in custody at the John Latorraca Correctional Center. Both men are being held without bail.
"Our community is still a very safe place to live and though this was a tragic event, I am happy to say that because of the hard work from our detectives, those responsible will be held to answer for this crime," Reyna said.
Zamora's killing was the first homicide in Los Banos this year. So far there have been two killings in the city in 2010.
