LOS BANOS -- A 53-year-old man will stand trial in stabbing death of a 49-year-old Gustine grandmother, a Merced County judge decided Wednesday.
Alfonso Guzman is accused of killing his sister-in-law, Linda Guzman, after an argument at her 359 Sycamore Ave. home in Gustine on June 24, 2009. He's charged with first-degree murder, along with three enhancements for allegedly using a knife.
After hearing testimony from police, Merced County Superior Court Judge Donald J. Proietti found ample evidence to try Guzman. His next court hearing is scheduled for Oct. 1 at Merced County Superior Court in Los Banos.
The victim lived with her husband and the defendant had been staying with the couple for at least several months, police said.
The motive for the stabbing remains unclear.
Guzman was previously convicted of murder in New Mexico in 1994. He was sentenced to 18 years in prison, but was released after serving less time.
He's being held without bail.
