KINGSBURG -- Garrett Steele looked pretty good as Kingsburg High's new quarterback Friday night.
Taking the reins for injured Austin Bray, Steele passed for 254 yards, rushed for 163 and accounted for four touchdowns as the defending Central Section Division IV champions denied Mike Sparks his 200th victory by holding off Dos Palos 34-28.
Dos Palos, in Sparks' final season, stayed close all night thanks to Kevin Schofield, who rushed for 226 yards and four touchdowns.
Five days was all Steele needed to make the switch from running back to quarterback.
Never miss a local story.
Steele had thrown about six passes in his first three seasons before Bray suffered left arm and wrist injuries last week against San Luis Obispo.
"I felt real comfortable," said Steele. "My line gave me a lot of time. When there was nothing there, I tucked it and ran. And when (pass plays) were there, I hit it."
Steele's only mistake of the night, an interception in Dos Palos' end zone with 3:30 remaining in the game, gave Spark's boys a chance to come back.
But Nico Cantu intercepted a Ryan Yriarte pass and Kingsburg ran off all but the final 36 seconds.
