The John Montano Invitational took on a new format this year — match play.The format was a success for the host.
Griffin Kelley defeated Pitman’s Troy Bennett in the championship of the Hogan Bracket to help the Merced golf team in the tournament.
“The pace of play was good,” said Merced coach Scott Winton. “The kids really enjoyed it. It’s something different. It’s something the kids see on TV. The Ryder Cup follows this format. Like I said, it’s different — it’s 1-on-1.”
Kelley defeated Golden Valley’s Kyle Larson 4-2 and Pitman’s Josh Parker 3-2 on his way to the championship match.
Merced’s Zack Lemas also won the Palmer Bracket with a 2-1 win over Atwater’s JD Brownwood.
The Atwater team of Manuel Martinez and Wesley Snell won the Nicklaus bracket.
Merced won the tournament with 13 points. Each match was worth one point. Atwater finished in second place with nine points.
BUHACH COLONY 0, LOS BANOS 0
ATWATER -- Mykaela Macias stopped two shots to help Buhach Colony earn a 0-0 tie with Los Banos.
Buhach Colony had 12 shots on goal, but failed to find the net.
BC is now 0-2-1 in the Central California Conference and 5-6-1 overall.
