Merced will Google itself today.
Hundreds of Merced residents will gather at Merced College's Don Odishoo Field Saturday to spell out the name of the Internet giant, hoping that the gesture will persuade Google executives to select Merced for its ultra-high-speed Internet test.
The event, which will last from 10 a.m. to noon, is being organized by the Greater Merced Chamber of Commerce. Volunteers are being asked to wear white T-shirts.
Google announced in February that it would build and test ultra-high- speed broadband networks in trial communities around the U.S. The company encouraged local government agencies and private citizens to apply. The application period ends March 26.
