Sonora resident Emily Shumway took first place and $1,000 Saturday in the Rotary District 5220 speech contest finals, held at California State University, Stanislaus, in Turlock. Emily is a Summerville High School sophomore sponsored by the Twain Harte Rotary Club.
Three Modesto-area high school students were awarded honorable mentions Saturday: Escalon High junior Emma Baumhauer, sponsored by the Escalon Sunrise Rotary Club; Turlock High senior Nadine Khedry, sponsored by the Turlock Rotary; and Enochs High senior Jillian Ramos, sponsored by the Modesto Sunrise Rotary.
Other speakers to receive honorable mentions included Ripon Christian High senior Courtney Jespersen, sponsored by the Ripon Rotary; Los Banos High senior Emily Atkins, sponsored by the Los Banos Rotary; and Livingston High senior Fernando Carrillo, sponsored by the Livingston Rotary. The students spoke on the topic "The Future is in Our Hands."
Each speaker already had won first place in a club contest and an area contest. Susan Drake, governor of Rotary District 5220, awarded certificates to all speakers.
