Merced's homeless committee, set up to make recommendations to the City Council for solving the city's homeless problem, came up with a series of recommendations on the kinds of facilities a possible campsite should have, according to Mike Conway, the city's spokesman.
The split committee voted to recommend the facilities include bathrooms, an elevated pad for tents, fresh water, showers, garbage services, shade shelters and police access.
The committee also passed a series of other motions at Wednesday's meeting. One was to put a trailer at the site for a caretaker and doctor visits. Another motion that passed recommended the duration of stay at the proposed campground be decided on a case-by-case basis.
The committee also passed a motion recommending that the city should put together a 10-year homeless plan, which could help in getting more funds from the Department of Housing and Urban Development.

The committee is conducting a poll to get an idea of what private organizations might be interested in helping run a campground. Any group interested should e-mail Robyn Stiles at the city of Merced at stilesR@cityofmerced.org. Submit the organization's name, a contact, phone number and a brief description of services that could be provided. E-mail responses need to be in by 5 p.m. Tuesday.
The committee's next meeting is scheduled for March 17 in City Hall at 5:30 p.m.
The committee's final recommendations will be presented to the City Council on April 5.
