While many people are opposed to teen pregnancy, some seem to be oblivious to the effect it will later have on the child and the parent. Teen pregnancy is becoming a strong social norm. The pregnancies most often are a result of the effects of poverty, broken family lives, lack of access to information and contraceptives, and a child's inability to dream of a brighter future.
Girls think they're mature enough to begin a family as young as 14. This only shows their lack of responsibility as Grandma Dearest will be raising their children.
The National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy claims nobody knows why the rates have gone up. The media's increased portrayal of pregnant teens is definitely noteworthy. The hit movie "Juno" as well as the pregnancy of Jamie Lynn Spears seem to be promoting other teens to follow in their footsteps. Teen pregnancies are on a rise nationally, making it seem like some kind of trend. What troubles me is the lack of morality in the media. This has affected the public by their perception of what is now acceptable.
