For the second year in a row, Natalie Cleek, a sophomore representing Big Valley High School, won command performance in the solo division at the Association of Christian Schools International Northern California Musicale in Sacramento.
Carl J. Kelm, a 2005 graduate of Beyer High School and a junior at Stanford is serving as President of The Stanford Republican Club. He also is Executive Editor of The Stanford Review, the school's conservative newspaper. Carl will attend Oxford University in England this spring as part of Stanford's overseas study program. Carl, 20, is the son of Norma Kelm and the grandson of Dr. and Mrs. Ramon Batista, all of Modesto.
Twelve high school students will compete in the Rotary district speech contest finals, set for April 5 at California State University, Stanislaus.
Students from the Modesto area include Breanna Jones, Beyer High, sponsored by Modesto North Rotary; Morgan Cavanaugh, Big Valley High School, Salida Rotary; Sydney Featherstone, Ceres High, Ceres Rotary; Jessica Smyers, Orestimba High, Newman Rotary; Alana May Armstrong, Sierra High, Manteca Rotary; Erica Voris, Bucach Colony High, Atwater Rotary; Eliza Houghton, Sonora High, Sonora 49ers Rotary.
The finals of the district Rotary speech contest will be at 1 p.m. in room D-28, in the Drama Building. The public is invited. First-place winner will receive $1,000 and will speak at the annual Rotary district conference on April 19 in Sparks, Nev.
