What is the primary reason you are running for this office?
My primary reason for running is to work for an educational outcome that insures that every student receives the highest quality education possible.
What will your single most important priority be if you get elected?
As an elementary school teacher, I have seen the content areas of science and social studies given a lower priority to that of reading, writing and math, especially since No Child Left Behind. Research shows that students today are woefully lacking in science and social studies skills, which is a serious problem in today’s competitive world. Therefore a high priority of mine would be to improve student achievement in science and social studies. One possible solution would be to combine the three and teach reading through the content areas, at least in grades 4th – 6th. All kids, in all categories, learn best through a hands-on motivational approach, and science and social studies provide that avenue. These content areas also allow the application of what the students have leaned in writing and math. I believe this approach would not only produce excellent readers, but excellent higher-level thinkers and problem solvers as well. We have excellent teachers in Ceres, and I’m sure that many would volunteer to pilot such a program. Who knows, maybe this would also free up some time for more instruction in the Arts. What sets you apart from the other candidates? What sets me apart from the other candidates is my experience, 30 years, within the field of education. I had the privilege of being a Ceres Unified School District employee for almost 29 years; serving as a classroom teacher for most of those years while also providing leadership as a resource teacher, lead teacher, mentor and interim principal. During this time I learned the importance of being a good listener, a quality that an effective board member must have. The ability to listen respectfully to all points of view, from the community, the parents, the students, the staff, and the administration before making decisions that affect the education of our children.
