Contractor workshop

The Merced City School District will hold a Contractor and Vendors Outreach Workshop on Wednesday from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at Rivera Middle School, 645 Buena Vista Drive. Thirty to 50 local contractors are expected to attend the event, where they can find out about bidding on the Rivera Middle School expansion project as well as long-term modernization at all district campuses. McSwain advisory council

The McSwain Municipal Advisory Council will hold its monthly meeting at 7 p.m. Wednesday at McSwain Elementary School, 926 Scott Road. Dana Hertfelder, director of Merced County Public Works, will give a brief presentation regarding roads and current projects. All McSwain residents are encouraged to attend.

Open Cockpit Day

Open Cockpit Day will be held 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday at Castle Air Museum, 5050 Santa Fe Drive, Atwater. Tickets are $12 for adults, $8 for seniors, $5 for ages 6-17, and free for children younger than 6 and active military personnel. There will be dozens of vintage aircraft, law enforcement and fire demonstrations, food and helicopter rides. For more information, visit CastleAirMuseum.org.

Merced County farmers markets

The Valley Farmers Market is open every Sunday from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 2877 Atwater Blvd. in Atwater, and the Merced Flea and Farmers Market runs every Saturday from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. behind the fairgrounds, 900 G St. EBT is accepted at both. The Merced Certified Farmers Market is open from 8 a.m. to noon Saturdays at 19th and N streets in Merced. The Buhach Farmers Market is open every Monday from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 4814 Clover Ave. The Le Grand Certified Farmers Market runs from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesdays on Washington Street and Le Grand Road, next to Pizza Factory.

Pet carriers needed

New Beginnings of Merced needs carriers for the 200-plus animals it transports from Animal Control to no-kill rescues each month. Any carriers appropriate for animals 30 pounds and under in usable condition are acceptable as are new carriers or money for their purchase. Receipts can be provided for tax purposes. Sweet Potato Festival

The city of Livingston and the California Sweet Potato Council will hold the third annual Sweet Potato Festival to celebrate the sweet potato harvest Sept. 19-21 at the Max Foster Sports Complex, 2600 Walnut Ave. The event will include a carnival, live entertainment, kids zone, food vendors, business booths and art show. There will be a culinary display with cooking demonstrations of sweet potato dishes. Discount carnival tickets are on sale at City Hall.
