A drunken-driving checkpoint is planned later this month in Mariposa County, the California Highway Patrol announced.

The checkpoint is scheduled for Aug. 30 at an undisclosed location within the county, the CHP said in a news release.

Although DUI-related laws will be enforced in the checkpoint area, the checkpoint is primarily an educational effort to reduce drunk drivers on highways, according to the release.

CHP officers will be contacting motorists in the checkpoint area by random selection. All motorists contacted will be given handouts with information about DUI-related laws and CHP safety programs.

The CHP reported 802 drunken-driving related deaths in California in 2012, the most recent data available.
