Work to add storm drain lines near a shopping center in Merced will sporadically reroute traffic for the next few weeks at Martin Luther King Jr. Way and 16th Street, according to one official.

A crew from Todd Companies of Visalia was recently began installing new storm drain lines at the intersection. David Gonzalves, the director of Development Services for Merced, said crews are connecting lines to the existing storm drains.

Because the shopping center will have added parking, he said, the developer needed to add lines to catch rainwater runoff. The work on the intersections will obstruct traffic sporadically, he said.

The projected date for completion was not available.

Pasadena-based Halferty Development Co. purchased the property in early 2013, according to city records. The company has plans to build a 9,180-square-foot Family Dollar store, he said, but the tenants for two other buildings are still being negotiated.

“It’s going to be a good addition to that area and to a lot of site improvements that need to be done to that intersection,” Gonzalves said. “That intersection has needed some work for quite some time.”

The site was home to the BMC West Building Materials lumber yard for decades. Crews began the demolition of that building in November.

Another Family Dollar, being built by Davis-based Boos Development, is planned for 21st Street and Yosemite Park Way.

Family Dollar is a general merchandise retailer, not a chain that sells all items for a dollar or less. Family Dollar has more than 7,100 outlets across the country, according to its website.
