Along with Snelling holding one of its major community events of the year Sunday, an area car club will have a show for vintage vehicles.
This is the sixth year that the Yosemite Corvette Club has has the show at Henderson Park in conjunction with the Snelling Homecoming Deep Pit Barbecue, now in its 58th year, Becky Anderson said.
Last yea,r 73 old cars showed up; the highest number displayed was 103 at the 2012 event. She is hoping for at least 100 cars this year.
Anderson said the Yosemite Corvette Club used to have its shows, “Vettes at the Lake,” at Lake Yosemite in Merced until the county no longer allowed cars on the grass because of a new sprinkler system installed in 2008.
Anderson said her husband, Bob, was raised in Snelling, is a retired meat cutter and helps with the cutting of the meat that is put in the deep-pit barbecue. The car show idea in conjunction with barbecue was his to help increase the number of people who attend both events.
The Yosemite Corvette Club donates any money it collects for food tickets to Snelling to help with the restoration of older buildings in the community, such as the courthouse.
Entrance is free to the general public. One meal ticket is included with the registration fee of a vehicle for the show.
The barbecue will be held from noon to 3 p.m. Cost is $8 for adults and $4 for children under 12.
