One man died in a single-vehicle wreck early Friday in Atwater that was witnessed by a Riggs Ambulance driver, police said.

The victim’s identity was withheld pending notification of his family.

Police received a call about 2:45 a.m. from the ambulance driver who reported a green Honda Accord was weaving “all over the road” on Atwater Boulevard, police Sgt. Dick Wisdom said.

The ambulance driver reported the Honda’s driver was “possibly” intoxicated, prompting an accelerated police response, Wisdom said.

Further investigation and toxicology tests will determine exactly what caused the driver to weave on the roadway, Wisdom said.

A short time later, the ambulance driver reported the Honda had crashed into a pillar near the Highway 99 entrance on Atwater Boulevard. The vehicle sustained major damage, trapping the driver inside, police said.

Firefighters used a hydraulic cutter to to remove the driver from the mangled car, Wisdom said.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene at 3:33 a.m., police said.
