Fatal west Modesto shooting gang-related, police say

Three men were shot in west Modesto early Wednesday. One of the victims died, and detectives believe the shooting was gang-related.

According to police Sgt. Martha Delgado, officers were called to a home in the 800 block of Crippen Avenue at 1:04 a.m. The home is about two blocks from Robertson Road Elementary School.

Police found two men with gunshot wounds, one in the garage and one in the house.

Officers and emergency responders performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation on the man in the garage, a 24-year-old, and took him to a hospital. He died a short time later. Police had not released the man’s name as of Wednesday afternoon because his family had not been properly notified.

A friend of the man’s family, Vanessa Moreno, said in a Facebook message to The Modesto Bee that he was a kindhearted and giving person who loved to play guitar and sing.

The victim inside the house, a 29-year-old man, was taken to a local hospital, where he remained listed in critical condition Wednesday afternoon.

About two minutes after the original call, police were called to the 800 block of Bristlecone Way, a block from the shooting scene, for a report of another gunshot victim. The victim, 20, said he had been at the Crippen Avenue residence when he was shot. He was taken to a hospital for treatment; his injuries are not considered life-threatening, Sgt. Ivan Valencia said in a news release.

Valencia said reports indicate several men and women were drinking in the home’s open garage when two men walked up and began shooting into it. “It kind of sounds like they snuck up on the garage and started shooting,” Valencia said.

He said detectives believe the shooting was gang-related because the victims appeared at least to be gang associates, the method of attack is similar to other gang shootings and gang graffiti is spray-painted throughout the neighborhood.

No suspects have been identified, and Valencia said leads were “limited.” Detectives on Wednesday morning were canvassing the neighborhood looking for witnesses and processing the crime scene.

Because it was dark when the shooting occurred, investigators have a limited description of the gunmen. Valencia said they appeared to be in their 20s and wearing white or gray shirts. It was unclear to investigators whether they left in a vehicle.
