Mother’s Day is fast approaching, and with it the pressure to find the right gift for mom.

For anyone still clueless about what to get mom on her special day, several businesses in Merced have some suggestions.

A gift that never fails to make mom smile is a flower arrangement.

Chris Johnson, a florist at A Blooming Affair flower shop on Main Street, said Mother’s Day weekend is one of its busiest times of the year. People come in looking for a bright arrangement, she said, but most leave it up to the designer’s good taste to create the perfect bouquet.

Flower arrangements start at $35. Johnson suggests throwing in some earrings, a bracelet or a crystal chime, which are also available at the flower shop.

“Personally, I would get my mom a bouquet and a crystal, so she can something have something pretty to look at,” Johnson said.

Diamonds are said to be a woman’s best friend, so it’s likely mom will not frown at a gift of jewelry.

According to Sally Johnson, a sales associate at Peraino’s Jewelers on G St., the most popular items in the shop this year are pendants. Emerald and gold pendants range from $135 to $1,500. Diamond earrings, wristwatches and gemstone rosaries also make great gifts, she said.

If you’re looking for something a bit more affordable, Johnson suggests stepping into their adjoining gift shop, Gift Emporium. There people can find anything from silverware and frames to gardening stakes and cheese trays.

The gift shop also offers such items as collector coins, antique perfume bottles, handmade wall decor from Haiti, and collectible porcelain vases.

Now, if mom has enough jewelry and home decor, maybe a spa day is just what she needs.

Several local spas and salons offer specials for Mother’s Day weekend. The only trick is booking an appointment.

Jessica Madruga, a mother of three and owner of The Pedi Bar and Salon on Yosemite Avenue, said there is no better gift for mom than a day of relaxation.

“Most of us moms could really use a day to ourselves, a day where we can just relax and be pampered,” she said.

The most popular services requested on Mother’s Day are facials and a massages, according to Madruga. It’s common for men to book manicure and pedicure appointments for their wives and mothers.

The Pedi Bar and Salon also has a selection of scarves, wallets and purses. The salon sells handmade necklaces made from antique pieces. The necklaces, made by one of Madruga’s friends, have become popular among her clients because they can be personalized with a name or a short message.

Although presents and pampering services can work for most moms, sometimes all a mother wants is to spend time with her children. A way to do this is to take her to a special brunch. The Vista Ranch and Cellars on East Highway 140 will host a Mother’s Day brunch from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m on Sunday. Brunch followed by an evening of wine tasting can make this Mother’s Day one to remember.

But Mother’s Day gifts don’t have to break the bank. Those with time and creativity can also surprise mom with a handmade gift. Websites such as Pinterest offer thousands of do-it-yourself craft ideas that will cost almost nothing and could easily become mom’s favorite: a photo flowerpot, a hand-printed apron, custom throw pillows or a a personalized photo album – the number of DIY project tutorials to honor mom are endless.
