Modesto Regional Fire Authority firefighters at the downtown Modesto station were training on one of the truck’s aerial ladders Friday afternoon when they noticed something amiss – three people on the roof of their building.

The two men and one woman were startled when they saw the firefighters and scrambled to get off the roof via a stationary maintenance ladder, said Division Chief Sean Slamon.

The woman fell several feet while trying to get off the ladder. One of the men grabbed her and they ran off. The other man, who received a few cuts and scrapes from a chain-link fence near the ladder, quickly was apprehended by nearby Modesto police officers who’d been dispatched to the fire station for a possible robbery, said Sgt. Lance Nicolai.

He said there was no damage on the roof, but Slamon said the fire department stores spare metal parts behind the chain-link fence and there is copper on the roof, which might have been their target. Nicolai also said the detained suspect was found with tagging materials.

Brandon Bayse, 21, was arrested on suspicion of trespassing. The other suspects remain at large.
