Four people were displaced when a north Modesto house caught fire Friday afternoon, spreading to the exterior of a neighboring home.

Just after 2 p.m., firefighters were dispatched to the 2300 block of Bolton Court, northwest of Standiford Avenue and Prescott Road. They arrived within four minutes of the dispatch to find large flames coming from the garage and kitchen area of the home, according to Modesto Regional Fire Authority Division Chief Sean Slamon.

The fire quickly was upgraded to a second alarm, bringing in additional resources.

Crews entered the home and rescued a French bulldog that was hiding in a back room. No residents were home when the fire started.

“At that point, the conditions changed drastically and crews had to back out. As they backed out, there was a structural collapse of the roof area,” Slamon said. “No one was hurt,” but the collapse exacerbated fire conditions, he said.

Slamon said the collapse allowed even more flames to escape and spread west to a neighboring home. Firefighters contained most damage to the exterior of the neighboring home, but residents from both homes were displaced.

The fire was brought under control in about 40 minutes.

A man and his son were displaced from the home where the fire originated, and a woman and her son were displaced from the neighboring home, according to the owners. Each declined help from the American Red Cross.

Slamon said the fire caused an estimated $225,000 total damage to the homes. The cause and origin are under investigation.
