A week of meetings in Merced

The Merced Civic Center will get a fair amount of foot traffic this week, its calendar peppered with meetings.

Workers from the Continuum of Care 10-year Plan to End Homelessness will give the results of the latest count of homeless people in Merced County today, according to officials.

Every January, volunteers tally the number of people who live on the street. A presentation of the findings is planned at 1 p.m. today in the City Council chamber at the Civic Center, 678 W. 18th St.

Also this week is a meeting on the plans to celebrate the 125th anniversary of the founding of Merced. The committee will gather at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday council chamber.

The meeting will focus on activities for the April 1 kickoff. Celebration planners are looking for more volunteers to help with the events, officials said.

A series of events are planned throughout the year. Officials said the committee plans to meet every Wednesday until the kickoff.

On Saturday, the Merced youth task force, which is charged with designing a youth council, plans an assembly for youngsters.

Teens from eighth to 12th grade are invited to the assembly, scheduled for11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Civic Center.

The City Council wants to establish a youth council to improve communication between the elected body and young people.

Assembly participants will be asked: “What would you like to see, change or improve in the city of Merced?”
