A Merced man was arrested for attempted robbery after allegedly passing a note demanding money to a supermarket clerk during an incident earlier this week, police reported Thursday.
Police responded to the El Bajio Market about 7:25 p.m. Monday for a report of a possible “suspicious person in the business asking for money,” said Lt. Andre Matthews.
Matthews said the caller reported the man was still in the store in the 1000 block of West 16th Street. Officers contacted Tyge Muldrow, 41, who was reported to have passed a note demanding money to the clerk. Witnesses said he put on gloves and sat down, allegedly waiting for the clerk to bring the money.
Officers contacted Muldrow who claimed to be a “deaf mute” who was communicating by writing notes. When police tried to arrest him, Matthews said he punched one of the officers and tried to escape.
Police detained Muldrow and he was booked at the Merced County jail on suspicion of attempted robbery, resisting arrest and assaulting a peace officer.
