The California Highway Patrol on Friday asked for the public’s help in finding the driver of a pickup that struck an 86-year-old woman Thursday evening and left before authorities arrived.

Vitalina Coelho suffered moderate injuries after she was hit by the pickup. She was taken by ambulance to Emanuel Medical Center in Turlock.

The incident occurred about 5:30 p.m. on Lander Avenue, just north of First Street in Hilmar. Coelho was walking home from the Dairyland Market.

As she neared Lander, she stopped at the sidewalk’s edge and looked for traffic to the north and south. Once she found it was clear, she began to walk out into the street in a westerly direction.

The CHP said the dark-colored pickup, possibly a Toyota Tundra, came out of the same parking lot. The pickup was at the store’s south driveway, south of Coelho.

The pickup turned right onto northbound Lander after waiting for traffic to clear. The CHP said the pickup driver apparently did not see Coelho walking across the street.

Coelho heard a vehicle approaching and turned to her left. As she turned, the pickup’s left side struck her right side.

The CHP said Coelho fell onto the street and rolled. She was found in the left turn lane. The pickup driver drove away, heading north.

Officers were still investigating the incident, and they said their information was based on their preliminary investigation. As of Friday afternoon, neither the pickup nor its driver had been found, said CHP spokesman officer Jason Schoonhoven.

The CHP asks anyone with information about the pickup or its driver to call the main dispatch line at (209) 356-2900.
