He wasn’t expected to arrive so soon, but Joshua Pineda became Stanislaus County’s first baby of 2014. He was born at 12:44 a.m. Wednesday at Modesto’s Memorial Medical Center.

“This is very exciting for us,” said his happy mother, Noemi Pineda of Modesto, who is a medical assistant for Golden Valley Health Centers. She and her husband, U.S. Navy veteran Joseph Pineda, also have an 8-year-old son, Anthony.

Joshua was a healthy 7 pounds and 18.5 inches long, but he was about two weeks ahead of schedule. Noemi Pineda said complications arose on New Year’s Eve, requiring her to undergo an emergency Caesarean section.

Joshua arrived about a half-hour before a child born at Modesto’s Doctors Medical Center, and babies were born a couple hours later at Turlock’s Emanuel and Modesto’s Kaiser hospitals.

There were nearly 7,640 births in Stanislaus County last year, for an average of about 21 newborns per day.
