The chief executive officer of Inter-Faith Ministries of Greater Modesto has resigned after three years at the helm of the nonprofit agency, which provides tens of thousands of people each year with food and clothing.
Barbara Vallo England, 73, resigned last week to become a caregiver for a sick family member.
During Vallo England’s tenure, Inter-Faith roughly doubled the number of people it feeds through its food pantry, with the amount of food doubling from about 1 million to 2 million pounds per year.
Inter-Faith’s food pantry feeds about 40,000 people annually. It also operates a clothes closet and a crop-gleaning program and has two “victory gardens.”
Other initiatives started during Vallo England’s tenure include giving milk to families with children and delivering food to homebound seniors.
“We accomplished so much,” Vallo England said. “I wish I could hug everyone who has helped us over the last three years, from the lady who sent us a $10 check every month to the man who gave us $10,000 every year.”
Inter-Faith has an annual budget of $3.53 million, with much of that coming from in-kind donations of food, clothing and other items, Inter-Faith marketing and development coordinator Elizabeth Greenlee-Harrison said.
The annual budget includes nearly $421,000 in cash donations.
Vallo England was paid $36,000 a year. She said Interfaith has about five full-time and about five part-time employees and scores of volunteers.
Greenlee-Harrison said Inter-Faith board members will help staff until an interim CEO is named, which should happen within a month.
