Help with warming tent
Volunteers are needed to staff a warming tent for the community’s most needy and at risk during the nights of the colder months – December through March. Many people have nowhere else to spend cold nights and do not have access to official shelters. The tent is located on “B” Street near 13th Street. Volunteers work an eight-hour shift from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. Contact Bruce Metcalf at (209) 480-3899 or Phil Schmauss at (209) 658-9558 for more information.
Benefit for ball teams
LE GRAND The Swingin’ The New Year 2014 dinner and dance to benefit Le Grand High School softball and baseball teams will be held at the Le Grand American Legion Hall on Dec. 31. The event begins at 6 p.m. with no-host cocktails available. Dinner is at 7 p.m. followed by a live auction. Dancing starts at 9 p.m. You must be 21 years or older to attend. Tickets are $25 and are available from head softball coach Gia Priddell and head baseball coach Aaron Martinez or by calling (209) 389-9400.
Special Christmas service
Many people are grieving and find it very hard to put that sadness aside to get into the holiday spirit. Whatever the reason for sorrow, there is a place that helps keep sadness and grief from feeling awkward and unwelcome. A Blue Christmas service will be held at 7 p.m. on Dec. 21 at Merced United Methodist Church, 899 Yosemite Parkway.
Big Trees winter event
ARNOLD The Calaveras Big Trees Association invites families to the fourth annual Winter Wonderland event, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Dec. 27. Activities include a scenic wagon ride inside the park, crafts for kids, music, hot cocoa, apple cider and cookies. Tickets are $12.50 for adults and $8.50 for children under 12. New Year’s Eve bash
Celebrate with the Twi’ Lighters from 6 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. on New Year’s Eve at the Merced American Legion Hall, 939 W. Main St. Music to be played will include Latin, country, salsa and old-school.
